FAQ & What to Expect

Do I need a therapist?
Everyone goes through difficult challenges in life. While you may have been able to cope with the challenges you've encountered, it's always a good idea to seek extra support when you need it. A professional therapist can help you recognize and overcome your habits and behavioral patterns so that you can better realize your full potential. People who get a therapist are the ones who are willing to do the work needed to live a more fulfilled life.

How can a therapist help me?
A therapist can help you in a variety of areas. Professionally, a therapist can help you focus on your career and market yourself more effectively. Personally, a therapist can help you improve your relationships with other people and your overall wellbeing. Through therapy, you can live a more balanced and fulfilling life.

What happens during a therapy session?
Each therapy session is different, depending on the goals and needs of the person. At first, we'll discuss what you want to accomplish by working together and lay out a plan on how to achieve your goals. Occasionally, we'll also give you assignments to help you direct your progress. We'll work together to discover what obstacles are in your way and figure out how to overcome them. With each session, we'll revisit your goals and see what steps are needed to achieve them.

Will our conversations remain confidential?
Everything in a therapy session is a confidential process and must remain so in order for it to be successful. All sessions are confidential unless there is a danger to yourself, a child, or an elderly person. In those cases, we are required to report to an authority.

What to Expect During Your Visit

The First Session
Arrive at 70 Sunrise Highway. We are located on the 5th Floor in suite 500. Street parking is available. Please do not park in the garage attached to the building, as this area is only for tenants and not for visitors to the building. When you arrive at Suite 500, make yourself comfortable in the waiting area. Your therapist will come and greet you at the start of your appointment time. You will be asked to complete some initial paperwork and sign consent forms. Please also have a photo ID and your insurance card available. The focus of the first session is getting to know you, discussing your current concerns, and identifying your goals for therapy. You will be asked how various aspects of your life may contribute to your current experiences. You will also have an opportunity to ask as many questions as necessary for you to make an informed decision regarding your treatment.

Group Practice
Life Matters Psychological Services is a group practice that collaborates with different clinicians with multiple areas of specialty and theoretical orientations. We have similar but varying ways of approaching and resolving a client's presenting concerns. Should you call to schedule an appointment and a clinician is not available, please feel free to ask for an appointment with another clinician.

We approach our work from a multidisciplinary perspective and as a team — meaning that we communicate regularly about our clients in a constructive manner, offering feedback and alternative ways of making therapeutic gains. All clinicians are supervised by Dr. Gayle.

How long your treatment will last depends on your concerns, your level of consistency and engagement in therapy, and your goals. Each client is unique with specific needs, but sessions are typically 45 minutes.

While everyone finds therapy useful for different reasons, many report feeling a sense of relief after being able to express feelings that have often been stored away for many years. Therapy provides an open, unbiased, and calm approach to dealing with many life issues. Clients develop a better awareness of themselves, their issues, and their concerns and learn effective ways of coping.

Age Range
Life Matters Psychological Services serves clients of all ages and with all presenting concerns. Our clinicians have extensive experience working with children and adolescents as well as adults.

We accept most major insurances. If you do not have insurance or choose not to use your insurance, the fees are as follows:

45-Minute Individual Therapy Session - $80
80-Minute Couples' Counseling Session with Dr. Gayle and Mr. Muller - $200
45-Minutes Individual Therapy Session for Students & Recent Graduates** - $60

* Fees and copayments are due at the beginning of each session for service provided.
**Students and recent graduates must show proof of current enrollment at a college or university or have graduated within the past two years.

Cancellations must be made at least 24 hours in advance by calling (516) 439-1639. If you miss a session or cancel less than 24 hours in advance, you agree to pay the full fee for services. This policy is in place because you are reserving the time and space to receive the service. Your cooperation with this is greatly appreciated to allow other clients to utilize the time and space should you need to cancel.

Please call (516) 439-1639 to schedule an individual therapy or couples' counseling session.
